Beskrivelse

Yukon. General description: Yukon was originally built at Hjorne and Jacobsen’s shipyard in Frederikshavn in the north of Denmark 1930 she is a Hajkutter design. These vessels are renowned for their great seakeeping, graceful lines, and robust construction. Yukon is of medium size for the trawling industry in these waters, she had a dry fish hold and fished commercially until the mid-seventies. As a shipwright and mariner of traditional sail I together with my wife, also a mariner purchased Yukon in 1997 and completed a major restoration over the following seven years including new engine, electrics, and plumbing. As part of our restoration Yukon’s hull was restored at Ring Andersen shipyard in Denmark. This enabled the total redesign of her on deck with subtly profiled deck houses giving an excellent view from aft. Our ambition has always been to sail our ship to her full potential and over the years of continuous surveyed operation, we have refined and developed Yukon into the great sea boat that she is today. Before starting our world voyage in 2010 after 6 years of sailing charter in Denmark, we added a single yard to her mainmast. This has proven to be ideal for both Tradewinds and sheltered water sailing, enabling a larger more balanced sail plan, without the need for a large crew. Davits were also added for a RIB and solar panel, along with extra ballast and reinforcing for her keel. Complemented with a spacious arrangement below, to a liveaboard and long-distance charter vessel with a total of 12 berths. Yukon's interior is light and comfortable with full headroom over most of the accommodation. The aft cabin is accessible from midships and aft making her comfy as a liveaboard. Her finish below is white painted shiplap planking and natural timber primarily Danish oak and silver ash with some Tasmanian influences. We have spent many a fine hour in her lovely saloon which features a woodstove and has seating for up to 10. As a family and as a charter company we have entertained thousands of guests on both daytrips, gourmet cruises and ocean crossings, in both Europe and Australia. We have sailed over fifty thousand nautical miles since 2004 culminating with our arrival back in Denmark in July 2023 and the completion of our circumnavigation. In 2006 Yukon was awarded a prize for Best Restored Vessel by the Traskibs Sammenslutningen (Wooden Ships Association of Denmark.) You can read more about our time with Yukon on our website www.sailingvesselyukon.com Our website features articles including a more detailed description of our restoration which was published by WoodenBoat Magazine in 2011 nr.220. We also have a feature article in WoodenBoat Magazine in January February 2024 which describes our preparation for circumnavigation and our years in Tasmania.
