Heard 28, 1992/3 - £17,950
The Heard 28 has become established as a modern 'classic', incorporating many of the features from traditional working boats of the West Country, that often enjoys 'class' racing within 'Classic' sailing festivals and events.
"In the late 1960’s, Percy Dalton was commission to produce a weatherly and roomy cruising design to be moulded in GRP and fitted out by Heards of Mylor Bridge on the Fal estuary in Cornwall. Percy Dalton (1906-1982) was a noted yacht designer and artist, combining these skills, as previously did artist and yacht designer Albert Strange to produce a shapely little vessel, pleasing to the eye and with a very capable sailing ability. Percy who spent his working life in the Falmouth area drew inspiration from the local working craft.”
The design has become a desirable, and sought after classically-styled yacht which infrequently come to the market.
‘Emily Grace’, first commissioned in 1992 for her original first owner, Martin Tregoning (the author of ‘Classic Boat Seamanship’), and then sold to the current owner in 1999. A year was spent in re-building the cockpit to be self-draining and preparing the vessel generally in readiness for an extensive European and Mediterranean adventure. ‘Emily Grace’ took her owners through the French canals and east as far as Turkey before returning to the UK, via Brittany.

Accommodation
Accessed through double, removable and panelled companionway doors, with wooden sliding hatch over, two cabins, offering four to five berths with a separate heads compartment:
The forward cabin: fitted with two single berths in a V-berth formation with an in-filling cushion to provide a double berth if required. Light and ventilation via two very effective deck-lights and a centreline for'hatch.
There is access to the chain locker through an opening hatch within the forward bulkhead. Storage is provided within the cabin by shelving outboard to either hull side and lockers beneath the bunks.
The heads compartment: This utilises the beam of the hull immediately ahead of the main bulkhead, with a marine-flushing toilet unit fitted to port (within a wooden and fully closeable shroud) with a slide-out handbasin above/outboard that then can drain into the heads’ bowl. A hanging locker (currently used for many of the sails’ storage) is fitted to starboard side of the compartment. A holding tank can be supplied, loose, with the boat.
Main Cabin: From the main bulkhead aft to the companionway the living space is open with partial bulkheads port and starboard, minimising the division between the saloon area, galley and nav. Table spaces. Such a layout makes the saloon feel significantly larger and maximises the light throughout the space from the 6 round portlights and companionway hatch. A straight bench settee berth is located to the starboard side, while to port, a shallow U-shaped settee berth surrounds the table and, in combination with the adjustable table could provide a wide single or ‘friendly’/tight double berth. There are four closed lockers to each side, behind the backrest cushions and all the space beneath the settees themselves is available for storage too – with the water tanks fitted aft, either side of the engine.
Galley: located at the aft end of the living space, to port of the companionway and provides a simple, but practicable catering facility with a small stainless-steel sink (fitted with a foot pumped faucet) and a fully gimballed 2-hob burner cooker, with grill and oven. Space, outboard of the cooker’s swing has been well utilised by providing a deep, top-access locker with lid, while there is a conventional, below-work surface locker (shelved) beneath the sink that accommodates a rubbish bin. Crockery stowage is provided for beneath the port side deck. A carry-on refrigerated coolbox is included in the vessel’s inventory, together with a suitable 240- 210V AC step-down transformer.
Chart table: located to starboard of the companionway steps and provided with a dedicated Navigator’s seat. A half-size Admiralty chart-sized lifting top is provided with deep fiddles to prevent charts sliding off and chart storage is provided beneath the table top. Outboard of the chart table, a 12-way 12V DC distribution and fuse panel is to the navigator’s right hand, with a fiddled and sub-divided shelf, suitable for almanacs, provide outboard of the navigator’s elbow. An Autohelm ST 50 multi-function display and Furuno GP-32 GPS are mounted above the chart table, the latter with output plug to be able to input the vessel’s position onto a laptop pre-loaded with navigation cartography.
Mechanical and Electrical Systems
Engine:
Fitted with a Vetus Marine M4.14 (Mitsubishi-based) four cylinder, naturally aspirated diesel, rated up to 33 BHP, with 2899 recorded running hours, driving a three-bladed propeller through a conventional stainless steel propeller shaft. A ‘soft’ coupling is fitted between gearbox and the shaft to ease torque impact upon engaging gears and to reduce transferred vibration underway. A rope cutter by Ambassador Marine is fitted ahead of the propeller and a Volvo Penta dry-seal fitted to the inboard end of the stern tube. The engine has been serviced and new flexible engine mounts fitted by Weir Quay Boatyard in advance of the boat being placed on the market.
Electrical:
Two individual lead acid batteries are selected and isolated using a rotary switch located alongside the navigator’s seat. The batteries have been ‘exercised’ and are in storage with the Weir Quay Boatyard.
Tankage:
Two stainless steel fuel tanks in total are fitted (both with approx. 65 litres max. capacity), one to each side of the engine space, with balancing pipe and common fuel/water separator filter housing to starboard side of the engine.
Two stainless steel freshwater tanks (both with max capacity of 80 litres max. capacity)
