Description

Sparkman and Stephens 36 feet / one tonner launched in 1964 under the name Diana III (won the World Championship in 1965 in the first offshore One-Ton Cups in Les Havre, France) - a piece of "Danish Maritime Heritage" - but threatened with scrapping according to the text.... The boat - which served as a model for the Swan 36 - was built by the legendary Åge Walsted with the interior design by Knud Hartvig Andersen (officially Walsted's building number 97) after prior written acceptance from SS. Several binders document the boat's history from the very first sketches/correspondence between Hans Albrecht, Åge Walsted, and Rod Stephens in New York and up until now. During the construction process, there was proper physical supervision by SS, and only the best materials of the time were used, including selected African and Cuban mahogany and Scandinavian oak for the keelson, as well as laminated frames and selected thick teak decks, etc. Diana has been continuously updated and well-maintained at the shipyard for many years, including an electric anchor winch, and in 2010, a brand new 3-cylinder Yanmar 30hp fresh water-cooled diesel engine was installed by the shipyard, along with a customized new drive belt, and later a professionally installed new diesel heater, etc. For inexplicable reasons, this beautiful boat has been "unused in the water for the past 5-8 years - which unfortunately has left its mark, including several delaminated frames, rot in the top oak bow, and possible damage/rot in the portside middle shroud attachment. Walsted has assessed the boat at various times, both in the water and on land, also after removing the varnish on most of the freeboard. A professional renovation by Walsted was estimated to be so extensive (read > DKK 500,000) that for economic reasons, it is not considered practical or realistically feasible for me. Scrapping is being considered, and only the 2.4-ton lead keel, functioning Yanmar diesel engine/driveline, original Molich winch electric anchor winch, and exotic wood materials are expected to fetch the sale price - BUT with this ad, I hope that there may be "one or more Danish enthusiasts" who can see the potential and personally renovate this Danish maritime heritage so that she can hopefully be enjoyed by wooden boat-loving sailors in the future.
