Oyster One Off 1978 – Ocean-going sailboat with a rich history The Oyster One Off from 1978 is a unique and characterful sailboat with an impressive background. This vessel, built by the renowned Oyster Yachts shipyard, is designed for serious sailing trips and ocean crossings. With a length of 12 meters, a beam of 4.5 meters, and a draft of 2.7 meters, this round-bilge sailboat offers a stable and comfortable sailing experience, even under challenging conditions. The hull is made of polyester and features a tiller steering with a single rudder, providing direct control and a sporty sailing experience. Oyster One Off now in the online auction. Everyone can bid until March 16, 2026. Designed for solo sailing and long distances What sets this Oyster One Off apart is its adaptation for solo sailing. The vessel was used in 1988 by Nigel Rowe during the BOC Challenge, a tough solo sailing race around the world. In preparation for this race, the yacht was modified to be easily operated by one person. All lines are led to the cockpit, allowing for the management of the entire sail plan from a safe position. The presence of forward and aft water-tight bulkheads enhances safety at sea, as the vessel remains afloat longer in case of hull damage. The sail equipment consists of three sails, including a mainsail, genoa, and storm jib. Additionally, there is a spinnaker for optimal performance in broad reaching conditions. The headsail is equipped with a furling system, simplifying reefing and sail changes. The aluminum mast and thoughtful sail plan make this vessel suitable for both short trips and long ocean crossings. Comfortable amenities and functional layout Inside, the Oyster One Off offers a practical and functional layout with a headroom of 1.75 meters. There are two fixed berths and four additional berths, making the vessel suitable for longer stays on board with multiple occupants. The accommodation features a dining area, refrigerator, oven, stove, and mattresses. For comfort on colder days, there is a hot air heating system. The sanitary facilities include a manual toilet with an 80-liter holding tank. The water tank has a capacity of 200 liters, sufficient for longer journeys without frequent refills. The cockpit is self-draining and equipped with a cockpit table, swim ladder, fenders, and lines, enhancing deck usability and safety. Power and electrical installation The inboard diesel engine is a Vetus 4.17 with 42 hp and four cylinders. The engine has approximately 1300 running hours and is electrically started. The engine mounts were renewed a few years ago. With a cruising speed of 8 km/h and a top speed of 15 km/h, this engine provides ample power for harbor maneuvers and motor sailing. The fuel tank has a capacity of 200 liters. The electrical system comprises three batteries, a battery charger, alternator, inverter, voltmeter, and shore power connection. Navigation equipment is extensive, including AIS, autopilot, depth sounder, GPS, chartplotter, compass, log/speedometer, VHF radio, radar, and wind gauge. This makes the vessel fully equipped for navigation on the open sea. History and potential The Oyster One Off has a rich history and is known as "Piper Rising," as described in Nigel Rowe's book. This background gives the vessel a unique character and makes it appealing to sailors seeking an ocean-going yacht with a story. The hull has undergone professional treatment in the past due to osmosis, with documentation and a sample available. Weighing 8000 kg and built with a robust construction, this vessel is designed to withstand the elements. The electric anchor windlass and anchor with chain ensure easy anchoring, even in heavy conditions. A life raft and electric bilge pump are present for added safety. Ready for new adventures The Oyster One Off is an ocean-going sailboat ready for new challenges. Whether you dream of solo sailing across the Atlantic Ocean or relaxing trips along the coast, this vessel offers the possibilities and equipment to bring your plans to life. With its thoughtful layout, extensive amenities, and proven seaworthiness, this yacht is an interesting choice for adventurous sailors looking for a characterful vessel with a proven track record.
