Description

Westerly Typhoon 37 TN 7 General Following the trend of the time, Westerly in England also considered offering a line of sporty racing yachts or performance cruisers in addition to their classic family yachts and comfortable ocean-going cruisers. In 1989, the design office ED DUBOIS was commissioned to develop a fast, seaworthy yacht for ambitious racing sailors. The result was an enlargement of the already existing STORM33, which in turn was a further development of the well-known FULMAR32. Built under the supervision of Lloyds in the well-known Westerly quality, the Typhoon was launched in early 1990. Stable, with lots of teak wood, two toilets, a navigation workstation, a huge galley, and a fully fitted fore and aft ship, the boat was significantly heavier than the targeted competition. Quality also comes at a price, and it was quite high. As a result, the number of sales achieved fell significantly short of expectations, with only 40 units built by 1993. The revised version Regatta370 was sold 7 times from 1994 onwards, and the Westerly-Ocean 37 only 4 times from 2000. Nevertheless, sailing with a Typhoon is something special. Even after all these years, it is still competitive and, once in its element - with plenty of waves and wind - it leaves most boats in its class behind. The Typhoon is not built for narrow archipelagos and quiet fjords; its territory is the rugged coast of Brittany, the cliffs of Normandy, and the waves of the English Channel and the Atlantic. Since 2013, we have also been using a self-tacking system for the specially developed SW jib for sailing in the Scheldt Delta with its narrow fairways and limiting sandbanks. It works great and is also fast. In England, Scotland, and the Netherlands, various examples still participate in various regattas with considerable success. Here is the comment from the Westerly Owners Association, the largest shipyard club in Europe with over 3000 members. The Typhoon does not have the usual spaciousness and space that one would expect from a Westerly of this size, but it is a beautiful boat to sail. Very light on the helm, wonderfully responsive, and fast. More than that, it gives that magical thrill when you know you're on a special boat! Designed to please the racing enthusiast but still accommodate the cruising family, the Typhoon is considered by many to be the pinnacle of Westerly's achievements. "Ed Dubois' design brief was simply to build a bigger, better Fulmar. The result is wonderful. With just the odd ruffled patch on a glassy surface, she grabs the zephyr and leaps forward in just the way a Husky yelps and pulls at the traces for the freedom of speed. In a blow, she'll eat her way upwind with the same enthusiasm, before roaring off on a run or a reach like a clipper coming up channel with the first tea of the season, surfing on every roller with the speedo straining at the stops. Wow!" In the first years, the yacht was extensively used as a training ship, and according to documents, two transatlantic trips were undertaken. The next owner partially used the boat in the Mediterranean and, according to their own statements, it was not intensively used and was hauled out of the water every winter. We took over the boat in 2009 and carried out extensive refurbishment work (€56,000). In 2023, standing rigging, diesel tank, and alternator were renewed. The sails are in top condition, and running rigging (Dyneema) is constantly replaced.
