Description

Tour dragon in fine conditionThe dragon is a sailboat type designed in 1929 at the request of the Swedish Sailing Club by the Norwegian ship designer Johan Anker.(see photo). The ship had to be suitable for touring and racing on inland water and sea and affordable to build. The dragon class became the largest international open unit class in the world. In 1936, the first dragon entered service in the Netherlands. The class became popular in Europe and in 1948 it gained Olympic status. This lasted up to and including the 1972 Olympic Games in Germany. The elegant hull shape, which now attracted worldwide attention has been modified since 1929. Only the cabin is more streamlined, which became possible because modern dragons no longer have berths and are built exclusively for racing. Rigging and sail plan have slowly evolved over the years. Since 1973, dragons made of polyester have been allowed in races. In the Netherlands many old wooden dragons still exist, sometimes carefully maintained or restored. They are used as weekend sailing boats and as racing boats. Because only conservative changes have been made in the past 80 years, the uniformity of the class has been reasonably preserved. This allows boats that are not too old or fully restored to compete with new yachts in races. Some 1,650 dragons are registered with the International Dragon Association. The largest fleet is in Europe with Germany at the top. The Netherlands ranks fourth with about 90 boats, behind England and Sweden. There are more dragons in the Netherlands, but they are not officially registered. Since 2008, the dragon has been part of the Vintage Yachting Games Organization.
