Bavaria 890 from 1983 - Polyester sailing yacht with functional equipment and practical layout The Bavaria 890 is a German-made sailing yacht, built in 1983 by the renowned Bavaria Yachtbau shipyard. This model is designed for recreational use on inland waters and coastal areas, offering a combination of functional sailing characteristics and a practical layout. With a length of 8.90 meters, a beam of 2.95 meters, and a draft of 1.65 meters, this vessel is suitable for both novice and experienced sailors looking for a classic polyester yacht with a spacious cockpit and a clear deck. Hull and construction The hull of the Bavaria 890 is made of polyester and features a round bilge hull shape. This construction contributes to the stability and handling of the ship. Steering is done through a tiller in the open cockpit. The boat has a single rudder. The hull has an International Certificate for Pleasure Craft (ICP). The boat was out of the water in 2024 for maintenance. No osmosis was found on the hull, but the rudder blade does show signs of osmosis. The non-slip coating on the deck needs replacement. Interior and accommodation Inside, the Bavaria 890 offers a headroom of 1.85 meters, adding to the onboard comfort. The layout is geared towards practical use during weekends or holidays. There are four fixed berths and one additional berth available. The accommodation includes a dining area, mattresses, a stove, oven, and a refrigerator. The water tank has a capacity of 120 liters. The toilet is manual and discharges directly into open water. For added comfort, there is a hot air heating system onboard, making stays on board more pleasant in cooler seasons. Sail equipment The Bavaria 890 is equipped with an aluminum mast and features a sail plan consisting of five sails: a jib, genoa, mainsail, storm jib, and spinnaker. The condition of the sails is described as fair. The genoa has a reefing system, simplifying reefing while sailing. The lines are led to the cockpit, making the boat suitable for single-handed sailing or sailing with a small crew. Engine and technology The propulsion system consists of a Volvo Penta MD7B diesel engine with a power of 17 hp. This two-cylinder engine is electrically started and dates back to the same year as the ship (1983). The engine is operational and is fueled from a 98-liter diesel tank. The cruising speed is around 6.5 km/h. The onboard electrical system consists of two batteries with a total capacity of 250 Ah, a battery charger, alternator, and shore power connection. A new starter battery has been recently installed. Navigation and electronics In terms of navigation, the Bavaria 890 is equipped with an autopilot, depth sounder, chart plotter, electric compass, VHF/DSC/GPS radio, and a wind meter. The wind meter is currently non-functional, but the necessary parts for repair are available. The onboard voltage is 12V and 220V. Equipment and safety On deck, the boat is equipped with a manual anchor windlass, an anchor with line, pulpit and pushpit, lifelines, swim ladder, and fenders with lines. A frame for a sprayhood and cockpit tent is present. For safety, the boat is equipped with a life raft from June 2025, a self-draining cockpit, and a manual bilge pump. Use and sailing area The Bavaria 890 has mainly been used on lakes for leisure and day trips. The owner states that the boat sails easily and that the lines led to the cockpit make sailing easier. A personal memory of the owner is sailing on the IJsselmeer, indicating that the boat is also suitable for larger inland waters. Other information The boat has a weight of approximately 3,200 kg. Conclusion The Bavaria 890 from 1983 is a classic polyester sailing yacht with functional equipment and a practical layout. The boat accommodates five people and is suitable for recreational use on inland waters and coastal areas. With a working engine, a complete sail plan, and basic navigation equipment, this boat is suitable for both day trips and longer journeys. Potential buyers should consider some maintenance points, including the rudder blade, the non-slip coating on the deck, and the navigation lights.
