Description

The Contessa 43, designed by Doug Peterson and built by the renowned shipyard Jeremy Rogers, is a sailboat with a rich history and proven seaworthiness. This particular model, hull number 12 from 1980, is a round-bilge polyester sailboat measuring 13.08 meters in length, 3.85 meters in width, and with a draft of 2.30 meters. The air draft is 21.5 meters, making the vessel suitable for both inland waters and open seas. Construction and Design The hull is made of polyester and recently received a new paint layer (end of 2023). The superstructure is also made of polyester and finished with Treadmaster non-slip material. The hull is blue with a white deck. The keel is fixed, and the boat has a single rudder operated by a Lewmar/Whitlock steering wheel from the aft cockpit. The hull underwent osmosis inspection in 2023, with any affected areas treated. A notable feature is the fixed hardtop, specially designed for ocean voyages. It consists of 14 layers of double-woven polyester on both the inside and outside, with three 1 cm thick plastic windows. This construction is engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions. Interior and Comfort Inside, the Contessa 43 offers a classic and warm ambiance. The headroom is 1.90 meters. There are three fixed berths spread across multiple cabins, with the potential for three additional berths. The saloon features a dining area, mattresses (renewed in 2023), cushions, and curtains. The galley is equipped with a Dometic gas stove with two burners and an oven (2023), a microwave, and a pressurized water system with a three-way water filter (2023). The water tank has a capacity of 300 liters, divided into two 150-liter tanks. There is an electric toilet system (2023) and a shower on board. For added comfort, there is a roof air conditioning unit that can also provide heating. Engine and Technology The Contessa 43 is powered by a Perkins 4108 diesel engine (50 hp, 4 cylinders) with a folding propeller (2-blade Maxprop). The engine is original from 1980 and has approximately 920 running hours. In 2023, a major service was conducted, including the replacement of oil, filters, impeller, and anodes. The engine underwent inspection with a camera, and spare parts are available. The fuel tank has a capacity of 160 liters. Electrical amenities include an alternator, shore power connection, inverter (2000W, yet to be connected), voltmeter, and an Optima Red Top starting battery (2021). The onboard system operates on 12V and 220V. Rigging and Sails The rigging is of the sloop type with an aluminum mast from the brand Kemp. The standing rigging is made of stainless steel wire. The sail plan comprises four sails: a mainsail (Quantum, 2023), a genoa, a spinnaker, and a gennaker. Multiple genoas are available (light air, high aspect). The Furlex furling system has been inspected and functions properly. All lines were renewed in December 2023, along with the blocks (October 2023). On deck, there are Lewmar and Anderson winches, two spinnaker poles, and a jockey pole. A watermaker with a capacity of 1150 liters per hour is onboard but still needs to be connected. Safety The safety equipment includes a new 4-person life raft (2024, ocean certified), additional flares and smoke signals, electric and manual bilge pumps, fire extinguisher, emergency tiller, and a plastic gas locker with a vent. History and Usage The Contessa 43 has an impressive history, having participated three times in the Ocean Race with winning results. The vessel is registered in the Dutch Cadastre and holds a sea letter. All relevant documentation, purchase receipts, and descriptions are available. The current owner prepared the boat for a world trip, but due to a growing family, opted for a larger yacht.
