Description

----- First-Hand Ownership ----- One must be more than satisfied with a boat to buy it brand new from the shipyard in 1980 and keep it until today. This very special boat is a Lady Helmsman, a design by the Swedish designer Hakan Södergren. In 1980, I purchased Lady Helmsman, No. 163, from Helmsman Yachtdesign AB in Vaxholm, Sweden. The shipyard sold the boats as ¾ finished products. I commissioned Helmsman Vordingborg Yachtservice, Denmark, for the final outfitting. The sailing characteristics, the absolutely solid construction of the Lady, and last but not least, the beauty of this boat still amaze me today. Throughout all the trips with the Lady - over 45 years now - I have always felt absolutely safe. The magazine Yacht, issue 15/78, wrote about the Lady Helmsman: - ... slim and sleek ... hardly anyone could tell the comfort below deck with headroom... - Sailing the "Lady" is a revelation even for a YACHT tester. You forget everything you've had in your hands before. I can only underline every single word. Of course, if you keep a boat for 45 years, that says it all about the boat. Comfort? Yes, of course, whether it's headroom, oven, or refrigerator. There is nothing to add about the sailing characteristics, whether close-hauled or under spinnaker. Sailing the boat with two people is perfect. I sail the boat together with my wife. The attached photos show that there is ample space for children or fellow travelers. The boat is in a very good, well-maintained condition. Backlog of investments? Absolutely not. Hull, gelcoat are in original condition, no painting required. Of course, the engine is also important, being costly: Volvo Penta, D1-30, 27 HP, 620 hours. Mast, rigging, sails - no need for renewal. Extensive equipment.
