Description

The Westerly Centaur is a well-known sight on European waters, renowned for its robust construction and practical layout. This particular model, built in 1978 by the esteemed British yard Westerly and designed by Laurent Giles, is configured as a motorboat without a mast, yet retaining many original sailboat components. Currently set up for motorboat use, it offers the potential for conversion back to a sailboat. Dimensions and Hull The Westerly Centaur measures 8.10 meters in length, 2.57 meters in width, and has a draft of 0.90 meters. Featuring a twin keel, this boat is suitable for grounding and navigating shallow waters, making it ideal for inland waterways, canals, and tidal areas. The hull is crafted from polyester, known for its durability and low maintenance. The boat weighs approximately 3,500 kg. Interior and Accommodation Inside, the boat provides a standing height of 1.83 meters, creating a comfortable living space. It offers four fixed berths distributed between the saloon and forepeak. The accommodation includes a dining area, mattresses, a stove, and a refrigerator. A portable toilet is onboard for sanitation. Electronically, the boat is equipped with a VHF radio and an FM/CD player. The water tank has a capacity of 40 liters. Heating is not installed, making the boat more suitable for warmer months or with additional provisions. Engine and Technology Powered by a 23 hp Volvo Penta MD11C diesel engine, this two-cylinder motor is electrically started and from the same year as the boat (1978). Fuel consumption is around 2 liters per hour, with a 20-liter diesel tank. The maximum speed is approximately 10 km/h. The operational engine is supported by a dynamo, battery charger, shore power connection (not tested), and a solar panel for battery charging. Two batteries onboard have a total capacity of 200 Ah. Navigation and Equipment For navigation, the boat is equipped with a compass, depth sounder, and VHF radio. The electrical system operates on 12V. Safety features include a self-draining cockpit, manual bilge pump, and various safety equipment. Exterior equipment includes a sprayhood, cockpit table, swim ladder, swim platform, fenders, lines, and lifelines. An anchor with chain is present, but there is no windlass. Sail Equipment and History Although currently offered without a mast and rigging, many original sail equipment parts are still available, such as the mast step and winches. This allows for the boat to be reconfigured as a sailboat if desired by the new owner. Originally purchased by a German owner, the boat found a new home in the Netherlands after about 20 years and has had multiple owners since. Last hauled out for maintenance and antifouling treatment in 2023. Documentation Various documents are included with the boat, such as the Lloyd's Register hull construction certificate, manuals, and a German "Standerschein." Use and Navigation Area The Westerly Centaur has been used for holidays on inland waters, canals, and locks. With its twin keel and shallow draft, the boat is suitable for a wide range of navigation areas, including shallow and tidal waters. This 1978 Westerly Centaur provides a solid foundation for those seeking a classic motorboat with sailboat characteristics. While currently set up as a motorboat, the presence of sail components allows for a potential return to a sailing configuration. The proven design, practical layout, and sturdy construction make this vessel appealing to both novice and experienced boaters.
