Description

Yukon. General description: Yukon was originally constructed at Hjorne and Jacobsen’s shipyard in Frederikshavn in the north of Denmark in 1930 as a Hajkutter design. These vessels are known for their exceptional seakeeping abilities, elegant lines, and sturdy build. Yukon is of a moderate size for the trawling industry in these waters, featuring a dry fish hold and was used for commercial fishing until the mid-seventies. As a shipwright and traditional sailor, my wife and I acquired Yukon in 1997 and embarked on a significant restoration project over the subsequent seven years, which included installing a new engine, electrics, and plumbing. The hull restoration took place at Ring Andersen shipyard in Denmark. This restoration allowed for a complete redesign of the on-deck area, with sleekly profiled deck houses that offer a splendid view from the stern. Our goal has always been to maximize Yukon's sailing potential, and through years of continuous operation under survey, we have honed and enhanced Yukon into the exceptional seafaring vessel she is today. Before commencing our global voyage in 2010, following six years of chartering in Denmark, we extended a single yard to her mainmast. This addition has proven ideal for both Tradewinds and sheltered water sailing, enabling a larger, more balanced sail plan without requiring a large crew. Davits were also added for a RIB and solar panel, along with extra ballast and reinforcement for her keel. Yukon boasts a spacious layout below deck, transforming her into a comfortable liveaboard and long-distance charter vessel with a total of 12 berths. The interior of Yukon is bright and cozy, with ample headroom throughout most of the accommodation. The aft cabin is easily accessible from midships and aft, making her ideal for living aboard. The interior finish features white painted shiplap planking and natural timber, primarily Danish oak and silver ash with some Tasmanian influences. Countless enjoyable hours have been spent in her delightful saloon, which includes a woodstove and seating for up to 10. As a family and charter company, we have welcomed numerous guests on day trips, gourmet cruises, and ocean crossings in both Europe and Australia. Since 2004, we have sailed over fifty thousand nautical miles, culminating in our return to Denmark in July 2023 and the completion of our circumnavigation. In 2006, Yukon was honored with an award for Best Restored Vessel by the Wooden Ships Association of Denmark. For more information about our experiences with Yukon, visit our website www.sailingvesselyukon.com. Our website features articles, including a detailed account of our restoration published by WoodenBoat Magazine in 2011 issue no. 220. Additionally, we have a feature article in WoodenBoat Magazine in January-February 2024, detailing our preparations for circumnavigation and our time in Tasmania.
