Contest 31 HT AC – Polyester sailing yacht from 1978 with spacious accommodation and recent updates The Contest 31 HT AC is a Dutch-made sailing yacht, built in 1978 by the renowned shipyard Contest Yachts. This model is known for its robust construction, seaworthiness, and comfortable layout, making the vessel suitable for both inland waters and longer trips on lakes and coastal waters. With a length of 9.50 meters, a beam of 3.15 meters, and a draft of 1.75 meters, this yacht offers a stable sailing experience and ample onboard space for a crew of up to six people. Hull and construction The hull is made of polyester, a material commonly used in yacht building for its durability and low maintenance. In 2022, the underwater hull was completely treated against osmosis and given a new gel coating. The boat was last out of the water in 2024 for maintenance, during which a new layer of antifouling was applied. The air draft is approximately 14 meters, making the ship suitable for most bridges on inland waters. Interior and accommodation Inside, the Contest 31 HT AC offers a headroom of 1.95 meters, contributing to onboard comfort. The layout consists of three cabins with a total of six berths, including two fixed berths. The salon features a dining area, and the galley is equipped with a stove, oven, refrigerator, and freezer. The mattresses are present and in good condition. The toilet is manual and discharges directly into open water. Both an indoor and outdoor shower are available, facilitating stays onboard during longer journeys. The interior floor was completely renewed in 2022, as well as the woodwork in the cockpit. The cockpit tent and sprayhood were maintained in 2023. The boat has a teak deck, providing a classic look and extra grip on deck. Engine and technical equipment The Contest 31 HT AC is powered by a Volvo Penta MD11C inboard diesel engine with a power of 17 hp. This two-cylinder engine is electrically started and functions properly. The fuel tank has a capacity of 80 liters, sufficient for longer trips under engine power. The cruising speed is around 5 km/h, with a maximum speed of approximately 8 km/h. Onboard, various measuring instruments are available, including a fuel tank gauge, oil pressure gauge, temperature gauge, and tachometer. Electrical amenities include a battery charger, inverter, shore power connection, voltmeter, and two batteries. The onboard voltage is 12V and 220V. Navigation and sailing equipment The sailing equipment includes three sails: a mainsail, a jib, and a storm jib. The headsail is equipped with a furling system, facilitating reefing and hoisting. The genoa underwent a full maintenance service in 2022. The mast is made of aluminum, and there is one mast onboard. In terms of navigation, the boat is equipped with an autopilot, depth sounder, compass, log/speedometer, VHF radio, wind gauge, rudder angle indicator, and navigation lights. This equipment makes the vessel suitable for both day trips and longer journeys. Exterior equipment and safety The exterior equipment includes a sprayhood, cockpit tent, cockpit table, outdoor shower, pulpit and pushpit, swim ladder, fenders, and lines. The lifelines contribute to deck safety. One anchor is present, secured with chain and line. An anchor windlass is not included. For safety, a lifebuoy is onboard, and an electric bilge pump ensures the discharge of any incoming water. Registration and documentation The boat is registered under the Belgian flag with registration number 343978. VAT has been paid, and documentation is available in the form of a registration certificate. The boat is currently used for recreational boating and has mainly been operated on inland waters and lakes. Summary This 1978 Contest 31 HT AC offers a blend of classic build quality and recent updates to interior, technology, and underwater hull. With a spacious layout, comprehensive equipment, and a functional engine, this vessel is suitable for sailors seeking a sturdy yacht with character. The boat is ready for use and offers opportunities for both short trips and longer stays onboard.
