Description

The keel of the Joanna was laid in 1935 on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. Shipbuilder H.P. Hansen from the renowned "Svaneke shipyard" began sketching that same year. Although there is no documentation, it is unlikely to have been an extensive set of drawings. Ships like the Joanna were typically built based on experience, intuition, and the availability of materials. A true Bornholmerbåd, so to speak... The vessel served as a fishing boat during its active years and sailed in the German Bight until 1974. In the mid-seventies, it was purchased by Mr. J. Deussen from Düsseldorf and was then named "Heimkehr". During this period, Mr. Deussen, who owned a machine factory, installed the current engine. The original air-started single-cylinder hot bulb engine was replaced by a Deutz, meticulously overhauled before being installed in the ship. In June 1988, the ship was acquired by Mr. P. Lange from Ekeren, Belgium. He had grand plans for her that ultimately were not fully realized, resulting in the vessel falling into very poor condition. Mr. Simon Besnard bought her, half rotten, from Belgium. At that time, the engine was the most valuable asset on board. Simon saw the potential of the ship and completely restored and converted it into a yacht. Its current appearance was achieved through several restoration phases that began in 1990. Over 4000 hours were spent on the restoration, with all hull parts above water fully replaced along with a significant portion of the framing. Decks were also installed, as well as the wheelhouse and cabin roof. The ship underwent a significant improvement and transformation, being renamed "Phoenix". Plans to sail her in the Mediterranean region, among others, were hindered by the substantial time investment. The restored ship was sold to Mr. Sjaak Tessel, who rigged it with standing rigging. Since 2004, it has had several owners. The current owner purchased the ship in July 2020 and renamed her "Joanna". Some underwater planks have been renewed, and a few frames reinforced. Efforts are underway to address overdue maintenance and make some adjustments, such as renewing the electrical system and stripping and treating the deck with Owatrol. Layout of the Joanna In the forepeak (2) is a spacious double bed. Additionally, this cabin features an extra berth, a sizable kitchen, toilet, and storage space. There is still a considerable amount of free space available. Below the bunk in the forepeak is the freshwater tank, followed by the diesel tank. A day tank for diesel is also mounted in the wheelhouse. The wheelhouse contains 3 benches and a table. The mast passes through the cabin prominently atop the keel.
