Holman & Pye Bowman 36 – Classic Sailboat with Ocean Experience The Holman & Pye Bowman 36 is a classic sailboat with a rich history and a design that has proven itself on the open sea. This particular model, built in 1970, was designed by the renowned British design duo Holman & Pye and constructed at the Seaglass shipyard. The hull is made of polyester and features a round bilge shape, enhancing the ship's seaworthiness and comfortable sailing behavior. The boat is registered with an International Certificate for Pleasure Craft (ICP). Dimensions and Construction Measuring 10.97 meters in length, 3.45 meters in width, and with a draft of 1.45 meters, the Bowman 36 is suitable for both coastal and offshore sailing. The air draft is 12.80 meters, allowing passage under most bridges. The interior headroom stands at 1.90 meters, providing ample movement space inside. The vessel has a displacement of approximately 8,800 kg. Interior and Accommodation The interior layout is functional and focused on comfort during extended voyages. The boat offers four fixed berths and two additional berths, including a double bed in the forepeak, a midship cabin with bunk beds, and a dinette convertible into extra sleeping space. The galley is centrally located and equipped with a stove, oven, refrigerator, and hot running water. The toilet is manual and discharges directly into open water. Heating is provided by a Dickenson stove, enhancing comfort on colder sailing days. Technical Equipment and Engine The Bowman 36 is powered by a Nanni 4.38 diesel engine with 38 hp. This inboard engine was installed in 2017 and currently has around 590 running hours. The engine starts electrically and consumes an average of 3 liters of diesel per hour. The fuel tank has a capacity of 240 liters, providing a generous range. The cruising speed is around 9 km/h, with a maximum speed of approximately 11 km/h. The electrical system comprises three batteries with a total capacity of 220 Ah. Power supply is supported by a battery charger, alternator, inverter, shore power connection, and a solar panel. The onboard voltage is 12V and 220V. Navigation and Safety The vessel is equipped with a wide range of navigation equipment, including AIS, autopilot, depth sounder, GPS, chartplotter, compass, log/speedometer, VHF radio, radar, and wind gauge. Safety features include a lifebuoy, liferaft, self-draining cockpit, and an electric bilge pump. Sail Plan and Rigging The Bowman 36 is rigged as a ketch with aluminum masts. The sail plan includes a mainsail, mizzen, jib, genoa, storm jib, staysail, gennaker, and spinnaker. The genoa is equipped with a furling system, and both the mainsail and mizzen can be reefed. A lazy jack system is present for the mainsail. The sail condition is described as fair. Multiple additional sails are available, making the boat suitable for various wind conditions. Deck Equipment On deck, the boat features an electric anchor windlass with chain, a sprayhood, cockpit table, exterior cushions, pulpit and pushpit, fenders and lines, a swim ladder, and lifelines. Steering is done externally via a wheel in the double cockpit. Maintenance and Special Features The boat was last hauled out for maintenance in 2023, including the renewal of antifouling. There is no osmosis present. An identified issue is that the halyards of the headsails currently run heavily due to a problem with the mast sheaves; this will be addressed soon. Documentation from a renovation period between 1996 and 2021 is available. During this time, the hull was repainted and coated with an epoxy layer, the keel was rebuilt, and the interior was renovated. Usage and Sailing Area The Bowman 36 has been used for leisure sailing, holidays, and as a liveaboard. The boat has sailed on lakes and seas and was utilized for a sailing trip to Scotland in 2024. Its seaworthiness and comfortable sailing behavior make this vessel suitable for extended voyages and ocean crossings. The comfort ratio of 40 underscores the stability and sailing comfort of this classic sailboat. Summary The Holman & Pye Bowman 36 is a characterful sailboat with a proven seaworthy design. With its comprehensive equipment, recent engine upgrade, and documentation of past renovations, this vessel offers a solid foundation for sailors seeking a classic yacht with ocean experience.
