Description

Malö 40H hull number 315 Malö 40H (40 m2 sail area) is an extremely well-built and stable 31-foot sailboat. It performs well on the open sea and has a relatively shallow draft of 1.35 meters. Perfect for a family with young children who can have the aft cabin to themselves, while still being able to navigate the cozy small harbors. Sails steadily in all waters, both under sail and motor, with enough engine power to maintain good speed even in rough seas. Safe and comfortable with charm, despite being a fiberglass hull, the teak woodwork is of the finest craftsmanship. Malö Yacht's woodwork is top-notch, even 40 years after leaving the shipyard, the woodwork remains in good condition without damage, but with the patina it naturally acquires. In the cabin, the headroom is 1.88 m, allowing even relatively tall individuals to move around comfortably. The table in the round seating area can be folded down to create an additional double berth. The forward cabin has 2 single berths and overhead cabinets all around. There is ample storage space under the berths, even with a spinnaker stored. The bow thruster is mounted under the forward section. The hallway features 2 lockers, one with wire baskets and one with a hanging rail. Opposite this is the toilet with holding tank and hot and cold pressurized water sink. The aft cabin accommodates 2 berths, each 2 meters in length, similar to the forward cabin. The cockpit is relatively deep, providing good protection even in rough seas. From experience, we know that it is us who give up before the boat. In light winds, one can comfortably sit on the cockpit edge and reach the steering wheel. The mainsail halyard and 2 aft reefs, as well as the spinnaker halyard, are led back to the cockpit, making it easy to hoist and reef sails. However, the forward reef on the mainsail needs to be set at the mast, but it can be rerouted to a single line both forward and aft. There is a genoa II on a furling system, providing good balance in the boat in light, moderate, fresh, and strong winds. A genoa I is also included. Spinnaker equipment includes a tri-radial spinnaker, a pole mounted on the mast, turning blocks on the aft cabin roof, and various sheets. Anchoring is easy with an electric windlass controlled from the anchor well. The anchor is a 15 Kg M-anchor with combined chain/rope. New Raymarine Elements 7" chartplotter with updated charts is connected to instruments and autopilot via Raymarine network. The autopilot can be controlled at the console near the companionway or directly on the chartplotter. The mainsail has lazy jacks, and the mainsail cover features a classic design, making it easier to fold the mainsail neatly. The engine is an older Volvo Penta MD17D with freshwater cooling. It was overhauled in 2020 and works well. Renewed nozzles and pump were installed in 2024. The boat has a fixed propeller shaft and is fitted with a 3-blade kiwiprop folding propeller. This folding propeller has the advantage of providing equal forward and reverse thrust at all engine speeds. If it gets a bit chilly, you can turn on the oil heater to stay warm. The heater is 2 Kw, so it's not a winter heater, but it provides warmth and helps dry out the boat towards the end of the sailing season. If any negatives need to be mentioned about the boat, it would be that a 40-year-old teak deck requires ongoing maintenance. The deck is still secure, but over time the material wears away, and screws become visible. This means drilling deeper, plugging, cutting deeper, re-caulking, which is indeed manual work, but can be appreciated by the right person. Overall, this boat is a well-balanced vessel for sailing practice. It offers secure sailing characteristics and solid construction. The shallow draft of 1.35 m and 36 HP engine are perfect if you have plans for river cruising. With the aft cabin where the youth can have their own space, in an otherwise spacious boat, the Malö 40H is a great choice. A detailed equipment list can be provided upon request.
