Description

Jettebeth IV is a beautiful old classic wooden boat built for racing - yet functional for holidays. Surprisingly, it boasts more conveniences than one would expect from a boat of that era. After sanding, painting, varnishing, repairing, rebuilding, and pampering the boat for 5 years, I must admit that it would be better not to have a job, so one could devote oneself to the sailor's life and fully enjoy having a wooden boat. Unfortunately, that's not the case. We simply don't use the boat enough compared to the effort put in. It's a shame it's not being utilized! And it sails fast! And well! Especially in moderate weather. Jettebeth IV was built on Thurø by Aage Walsted in 1963 along with the sister boat Diana III, following Sparkman and Stephens' design for the 1-ton class. They both had great success in regattas in the first years after their launch - but with lead keels, mahogany hulls, etc., they were gradually overtaken by the new smart and lightweight fiberglass hulls. Diana III was for sale a couple of years ago - whether it was sold, I do not know. Apparently, there were significant damages to the hull that would be incredibly expensive to repair. Jettebeth does not have such damages! It has been maintained and cared for as much as an old wooden boat can be - while still allowing time to sail. There's nothing to fault. It could cross the Kattegat tomorrow and venture into the archipelago. Over the last 5 years, it has been continuously maintained, with several major repairs and improvements made. Hull: Externally maintained with lamp oil/linseed oil every year and new antifouling. Damages where the old speedometers were mounted have been repaired correctly. The lifting zone just behind the keel has a new oak piece and stainless steel casing. Rot damage over the motor shaft replaced with new oak. Rudder shaft stabilized with steel flanges and through bolts. The rudder itself has been restored with new custom-made bronze bearings. Above the waterline, the hull is painted white and regularly maintained. To protect during harbor maneuvers, a mahogany fender list with brass trim has been added. Rot damage at the stern has been repaired with a new teak transom board. Rot damage at the bow has been repaired with a new oak stem - with an extension of the steel fitting holding the pulpit and roller furling. Engine: Volvo Penta D1 30B with 27 hp - diesel. From 2007 but not used until 2020 when I bought the boat. It had been stored in a shed all those years due to the previous owner's illness. The engine has been regularly maintained with oil, coolant, impellers, and filters. Supplemented with new hoses when the engine was removed in 2022 to change the engine mounts. Approximately 1000 hours of use. Runs like a charm. Fuel tank: Upgraded with an inspection hatch and easy access from the cockpit in 2023 with a special cover. Deck: The teak deck was renewed and sanded in 2022. This may hardly be done again! An alternative solution needs to be considered - or the radical solution: a new teak deck. Sea railings replaced. Original bronze fittings throughout. Cabin exterior in painted mahogany/white. The deck hatch renovated with perspex hatches and new fittings. Mast: original aluminum - with new custom fittings at the top, turned in bronze and stainless steel. VHF antenna mounted at the mast top. New back and side stays. Both short and long. The forestay is a "newer" Furlex. Sails: Many. Old. The mainsail has been regularly renovated. No damages. Roller foresail with new UV protection. No damages. Large newer genoa. 2 old but functional winches. All ropes in good working order. General accessories. Several anchors. Electric Lewmar windlass. CQR anchor. 40 m galvanized anchor chain. 2 steel anchors for the archipelago. Flag. Boat hook. 5 Viking life jackets. VHF with GPS. Large newer Garmin with depth sounder. Lines for winches. Mooring lines. Etc. Cabin: Well-equipped kitchen with Swedish spirit stove. Hot and cold water. Large water tanks. Also via solar panel. All pots, pans, cutlery, and crockery, etc. All types of glassware and a minibar. 6 berths with older blue covers. No major stains or damages. Beautiful brass lamps. Raise/lower table. Toilet with chemical toilet. The original flush toilet can be included. The cabin is as originally in white and varnished mahogany. Refrigerator. Navigation area - albeit small. And hundreds of other items. And that's just the current status. With such a wooden boat, there's always a nice to-do list - and a need to-do list. Are you curious? Feel free to call or write and ask questions. I know almost every bolt and screw. Disclaimer: You must love sandpaper, varnish, and DIY projects. Although I've come a long way, there's always something new and exciting to fix every year. And it IS fun - if you enjoy that sort of thing. I do, but I don't have enough time. The thought could be to store it until I retire. But I'm not sure it would be good for it to be on land for so long again.
