Reinke 1640 now in the online auction. Everyone can bid until January 19, 2026. Reinke 1640 – Steel sailing yacht with ocean experience and great potential The Reinke 1640, built in 1994, is a steel sailing yacht measuring 16.40 meters long and 4.50 meters wide. The ship was designed by the renowned German yacht designer Kurt Reinke and built under license at the Deutz shipyard in Cologne. The yacht was originally launched under the name "Lady Bianca" and later used as "Polarwind," an expedition sailing yacht for charter trips in the southern hemisphere, including Tierra del Fuego. Reinke 1640 now in the online auction. Everyone can bid until January 19, 2026. Construction and materials The hull of the Reinke 1640 is entirely made of steel, contributing to the ship's robustness and ocean-going characteristics. The superstructure is also made of steel, while the deck has a functional layout suitable for long sea voyages. The mast is aluminum, and the rigging consists of a genoa, mainsail, and staysail. Both the mainsail and headsail are equipped with a furling system, facilitating sailing. The sails are in reasonable condition. The air draft of 21.40 meters makes the ship suitable for ocean voyages, while the draft of 1.80 meters provides a good balance between stability and accessibility to ports. Inside, there is a headroom of 1.90 meters, offering sufficient onboard comfort. Interior and onboard comfort The interior is finished with high-quality woods such as teak and cherry wood, providing a warm and classic look. The layout focuses on comfort and functionality, with six fixed berths, a dining area, and a fully equipped galley with an oven, stove, refrigerator, and freezer. The wet cell area features an electric toilet and shower. There is hot water and central heating onboard, making stays comfortable even in colder climates. The electrical system includes a battery charger, inverter, shore power connection, solar panels, and six batteries with a total capacity of 600 Ah. The navigation equipment is extensive: AIS, radar, GPS, chart plotter, autopilot, depth sounder, log, wind gauge, compass, and VHF radio. Propulsion and technical equipment The Reinke 1640 is equipped with two inboard diesel engines, each 55 hp, four cylinders, and electric start. The engines are operational. The fuel tank has a capacity of 1400 liters, providing the ship with a long range. Current condition and possibilities The Reinke 1640 has an interesting history. After its construction in 1994, the ship was used for ocean voyages and commercial charter trips for many years. In 2020, it was sold to the current owner, who shortly after discovered water infiltration. The ship was immediately dry-docked, preventing further water damage to the interior. Subsequently, a lengthy legal process followed, but with no results. Since then, the ship has not been actively used and is therefore being sold in its current state. There is a comprehensive inspection report from 2021 that particularly describes the condition of the hull. This can be downloaded from the documents. We recommend interested parties to thoroughly review this report before registering for the viewing day and/or participating in the auction. History and character The "Polarwind" has a unique history as an expedition vessel and liveaboard. Previous owners used the ship for commercial charter trips in South America and had plans to sail around the world. Although this dream was not fully realized, the ship still offers the opportunity to be brought back to life. For the right buyer, this is a chance to revive a characterful yacht with a story and prepare it for new sea adventures. Potential and future possibilities Although the ship is currently not seaworthy, the design and construction of the Reinke 1640 offer opportunities for restoration and future use. The robust construction, spacious living space, and extensive equipment make it suitable for long sea voyages and even onboard living. For a buyer with technical knowledge or willingness to restore, this ship could be a project with potential for renewed use at sea. After restoration, the Reinke 1640 will once again be an ocean-going steel sailing yacht with a rich history and functional equipment. The ship requires structural repairs to the hull before it can be put back into service. With dual engines, extensive navigation equipment, and a comfortable interior, it is a yacht that, after restoration, could be suitable for long-distance voyages or living aboard.
