SummaryThe Hallberg-Rassy 34, designed by Germán Frers, is a well respected, proven cruiser with good handling and impeccable manners. Built to the typical high standards of all Hallberg-Rassys, this is a fast and easy to handle cruising yacht, all lines are led back to her large comfortable cockpit making her ideal for a couple who like to cruise with friends or for families. This yacht would make a great long distance cruiserWindsong is well equipped with heating good electronics including HD Radar and AIS Transceiver, dinghy and outboard.Description A revolutionary recipe (description taken from the Hallberg-Rassy book)There are many nice things to say about the Hallberg-Rassy 34. It was, for example, called a wolf in sheep's clothing. Conceptually, the 34 was a big, brave leap to take in 1990 compared to the boatyard's other models during that time. The plan was to construct a boat for younger sailors, mainly driven by a young Magnus Rassy. He was tasked with asking Germán Frers to design a more modern hull in comparison to the 352 and 312. With an aft cockpit, short lead keel, free-hanging rudder, and fractional rig, the 34 was partially inspired by Magnus's unique construction-the 35-footer Rassker Magnum. And by Frers's designs of the Hallberg-Rassy 45 and 36.Frers gave the hull a medium displacement, powerful stern, relatively low freeboards, a thin and racer-like forebody, efficient bow design, good waterline width, and an elegant, outdrawn aft section.'The Hallberg-Rassy 34, with her efficient keel and fractional rig, is a departure from other Hall-berg-Rassy models. This yacht is more performance oriented, but, keeping with the customary directions of Mr. Rassy, is also easy to steer and well balanced. It is a fine yacht that will remain attractive for many years,' Frers commented, and he was right. The 34 was popular for many years. It was produced for 16 years before it was replaced by the Hallberg-Rassy 342.When production began, the 34 was first produced without a windshield to accentuate the sporty style, and it was the first model with a fore and aft galley on the starboard side, and an L-shaped sofa on the opposite side. After listening to some feedback, the saloon was extended by 23 centimetres in 1994, leading to a corner galley on the port side and a forward-facing sink. By placing the entrance more aft, the saloon got more spacious, and its starboard berth became two metres long. The cockpit length changed from 2.42 to 2.24 metres, so still pretty large. The mahogany design holds the usual high Hall-berg-Rassy class in the form of laminated moulded linings along the doorways and strong linings around structural bulkheads. The caulked teak sole has a silky-smooth varnish finish, imbuing the experience on board with quality and craftsmanship. The laminate build up is robust in a hand lay-up method with Divinycell insulation. In addition, a beam system runs along the area below the soleboards, and the structural bulkheads are laminated all around. The main structural bulkhead is placed right in front of the upper shrouds and is therefore firmly positioned. The blue hull line is gel-coated, not taped. The sailing properties are very successful. The Hallberg-Rassy 34 is fast and has won a number of races. It has a noticeably good drive and rigidity thanks to the deep and heavy lead keel. The yacht accelerates instead of heeling over, keeping the balance with a pleasant rudder pressure. These properties are especially noticeable in a seaway, where the 34 powerfully cuts through the sea, rises, and sails gracefully across the waves. The Hallberg-Rassy 34 paved the way tor a long range of successful new models for the boatyard. By carefully combining a family sailboat with a powerful performance boat, the 34 was a revolutionary step, which connoisseurs consider a top model still to this day.Remaining in production until 2005 the design was continually tweaked to improve her accommodation layout, with changes to bulkhead locations, head configuration and placing of portlights etc. Over 450 examples of the Hallberg-Rassy 34 were launched before the Hallberg-Rassy 342 replaced this popular design.WINDSONG is hull number 279, built in 1999 and has been with her current owner since 2019, she had been based in Scotland for more than 10 years.Construction Hull constructed of single-piece GRP moulding.
