Sleepboot 1500 now available in online auction. Everyone can bid until September 21, 2026. Characterful steel tugboat with potential What boat is being auctioned? This characterful steel tugboat from 1962 is offered via Boatauction and presents a unique opportunity for enthusiasts of robust vessels, maritime history, and ambitious renovation projects. With a length of approximately 15 meters, a width of 4.50 meters, and a draft of about 1.50 meters, it has an impressive, sturdy appearance. The air draft is approximately 3.50 meters and inside there is a standing height of about 1.90 meters. The boat was built at Scheepswerf Laboe in Germany and served as a tugboat in the Baltic Sea during its original career. It was used for ship salvage, buoy placement and maintenance, and work at docks. This history is clearly reflected in its robust round bilge hull, practical layout, and seaworthy character. The steel hull provides a solid foundation for someone looking to preserve an authentic tugboat or further develop it into a comfortable workboat, houseboat, or unique pleasure craft. Sleepboot 1500 now available in online auction. Everyone can bid until September 21, 2026. What work has already been done? The current condition can best be described as that of a hull with the plating completed. The boat was previously purchased with the plan to test biofuels. Due to developments in that market, the project was not completed, causing delays in the renovation process. According to the client, approximately €130,000 has been invested in materials and labor for work on its hull and structure. The plating has been thoroughly addressed at the current yard. The bow has been fully sandblasted and treated with a two-component primer. After that, two layers of epoxy tar were applied. The interior has also been cleaned and preserved. In its technical space, the engine, coupling, and propeller have already been installed. It features a Cummins NT355 TD turbo diesel with six cylinders and an output of 355 hp. The engine starts electrically and functions properly. The drive system also includes a Reintjes coupling and a Stork propeller. Work on piping, cables, electrical installation, and controls has been removed for the renovation. This means that a new owner can carry out further completion according to their own preferences. A new exhaust silencer has already been installed. Additionally, various windows and electrodes are included with the sale. A custom-made stainless steel water tank of approximately 1,100 liters has also been installed. Is the engine operational? Yes, the Cummins engine is reportedly free but has been idle for some time now. It is a powerful six-cylinder turbo diesel with an output of 355 hp as stated. The engine is installed and starts via an electric starting system. The fuel tank has a capacity of approximately 3,100 liters. According to available data, the cruising speed is around 15 kilometers per hour with a maximum speed of about 20 kilometers per hour. The drive line is intended for serious work on the water and matches the rugged character of this former tugboat. According to the client, the engine produces virtually no vibrations. A buyer would do well to assess the operation of the engine, coupling, propeller shaft, and other technical components during an inspection themselves. The current state of the yet-to-be-completed electrical and hydraulic connections also calls for further inspection and completion. How does this tugboat handle? This steel tugboat is known for its stable and course-holding sailing behavior. During previous voyages it reportedly behaved calmly and firmly on rough waters and during stormy conditions according to the client. Its robust hull shape makes it less sensitive to side winds. Even on canals it maintains its course nicely which is pleasant during longer voyages and maneuvers in narrow waterways. Originally there was no bow thruster present; however even without this feature the boat reportedly maneuvered well according to the owner. Later on a hydraulic bow thruster was installed to simplify turning and positioning in marinas. Steering takes place inside using a steering wheel; the boat has one single rudder. With its weight of approximately 35,000 kilograms it feels solid and provides a stable base for further completion. What does the buyer receive? With the sale various parts are included that may come in handy when completing renovations such as windows, electrodes, and the already installed new exhaust silencer. On deck there are davits, fenders, lines, and safety rails present as well as one anchor with chain and a manually operated anchor winch. Due to its dimensions and weight this boat is naturally intended for staying in water as well as transport over water or via specialized road transport methods. The last known antifouling treatment dates back to 2018. Interested parties are advised to personally view all available information along with the hull and technical installation before bidding. Who is this boat suitable for? This boat suits buyers who appreciate an authentic former tugboat and enjoy extensive technical renovations. It is not a ready-to-sail yacht but rather an exceptional base with an impressive history, strong engine installation, and largely addressed steel hull. Those who complete it further can create a unique vessel for recreational sailing, long-term living aboard, work on sheltered or open waters or any combination thereof. The available documentation includes various documents such as old shipyard drawings, photos, and invoices related to renovations which provide additional insight into its background and completed works.
