Description

For Sale: Classic Sailboat "SYLPHE" – 1939 Race Bermudian Cutter The "SYLPHE" is an impressive Race Bermudian Cutter, designed by the renowned French yacht architect André Mauric. This classic sailboat, built in 1939, holds a rich history and stands as a unique specimen in the world of classic sailboats. Measuring 18.25 meters in length, 3.99 meters in width, and with a draft of 2.50 meters, the "SYLPHE" offers excellent sailing characteristics and a distinctive appearance. History and Design The Race Bermudian Cutter was originally constructed under the name "ARIEL" (later "IV") for Paul Blanchet, with the aim of winning races under the British RORC rating rules. Built at Chantier Pharao in Marseille, construction was interrupted by the German invasion of France during World War II. To prevent the 13-ton lead ballast keel from falling into enemy hands, the unfinished hull was scuttled in the port of Marseille, where it remained submerged for 6 years, shielded by the loyalty of local shipbuilders and dockworkers. After the war, the hull was salvaged and completed. The prolonged submersion may have contributed to the durability of the wood, slowing down the natural aging and drying process. In 1947, the "SYLPHE" was finally launched, commencing its career as a sailboat. Construction and Materials The hull of the Race Bermudian Cutter follows the classic S-frame shape, ensuring a stable and comfortable sailing experience. The use of wood as the building material enhances the ship's authentic appearance and sailing performance. The mast, also made of wood, supports a traditional sail plan consisting of a mainsail, jib, genoa, and storm jib. All sails are operated manually. Interior and Comfort Inside, the Race Bermudian Cutter offers a headroom of 2.10 meters and sleeping accommodations for four permanent and three additional persons. The accommodation includes a dining area, mattresses, a stove, oven, refrigerator, hot water, and a manual toilet. A shower is available, and heating is provided by a stove, ensuring comfortable stays on board, even during extended voyages. The water tank has a capacity of 300 liters, while the holding tank can hold 100 liters. The toilet discharge is directly connected to open water. Engine and Technology The Race Bermudian Cutter is powered by a Yanmar 4JH3TE diesel engine (76 hp, 4 cylinders) from 2000. The engine underwent a full overhaul in 2025 and has since accumulated 0 running hours. The cruising speed is approximately 10 km/h, with a maximum speed of 12 km/h. The fuel tank has a capacity of 300 liters, with a consumption rate of around 4 liters per hour. Technically, the Race Bermudian Cutter features modern amenities such as a battery charger, alternator, inverter, shore power connection, solar panels, and an electric windlass.
