Lovely 1963 Dell Quay Ranger 27 classic power boat cruiser This Dell Quay Ranger 27 classic power boat has twin diesel engines (about 1,600 hours from new) with recent new ‘Tek-Dek’ synthetic teak decks. Dell Quay built many Ranger 27s using the race-proved Huntress hull made by Fairey Marine of Hamble. (Many Huntress boats competed in the Cowes-Torquay powerboats races in the 1960s as did a Dell Quay Ranger 27 in 1967). An ergonomic design, a Dell Quay Ranger 27 offers a useful amount of accommodation. The fore-cabin has two single berths that, when using the in-fill, creates a double berth. Moving aft, the higher central cockpit has the helmsman’s seat to port plus the engine controls and recent new electronics - to starboard is the period galley. Off to port in the cockpit is the boat’s centrally-located heads with WC, hand-basin, shower, plus hot and cold running water. (This cockpit is a ‘safe space’ for children and dogs compared to cockpits of some other boats). The canvas top to the cockpit can be configured in several ways: shut; sides up; open back; bimini; or all off. Further aft, the day cabin/saloon has a settee on each side which provides two single berths as needed and there is a central table. Everything is very well-presented, neat and tidy, with traditional blue and white fabrics. Thus, with two sleeping cabins separated from each other by that central cockpit, this Dell Quay Ranger 27 offers privacy in each cabin. Aft of the day-cabin/saloon is the engine room with a large hatch above the two engines. This creates a useful, and safe, sun-deck area for relaxing. The pictures are recent and show that this boat has been cherished by the current Owner who has an eye for detail (as, for 25 years, did the previous Owner). This a much-admired example of a Dell Quay Ranger 27 - beautifully presented, with an extensive history file, and is complete with warps and fenders. This boat packs a lot of safe and enjoyable accommodation into her length of 27 feet. Broker's Comment. On the last day of May I really enjoyed being crew for the Owner bringing this safe and enjoyable cruiser from winter storage at Bembridge to Hamble Point Marina where the boat is ashore. The Volvo engines started immediately, we cruised at 20 knots and it was a joy to be on the water. Descriptions Additional Information Engines, Fuel, and Water The two new Volvo TAMD 22PB marine four-cylinder non-turbo diesel engines were installed in 1999 and they drive through the (also new) SX sterndrives fitted with counter-rotating propellors to give good manoeuvrability. All have been regularly serviced. The combined/total power is 210 hp. Economical cruising is at 20 knots with a top speed of 25 knots. The two diesel fuel tanks, each of 50 gallons capacity, are made of stainless steel and give a very useful range. There is one water tank of 35 gallons capacity. Deck Equipment Anchor and chain Stainless steel: - Pulpit at the bow - Stanchions around the deck with guide wires - Quarter push-pits at the stern Custom built beaching legs Manual bilge pump Ropes and Fenders Trim Tabs Fairey Marine of Hamble and Dell Quay of Bosham worked together. Huntress hulls were the ‘break-through’ power-boat design by Fairey Marine who had an enviable world-wide reputation for making wooden hulls using Agba veneers. They were bonded together under high pressure and high temperature in an autoclave, thus forcing the glue into the pores of each veneer making a firm yet flexible long-lasting hull. Dell Quay bought many Huntress hulls making Ranger 27 boats with their own thicker transom to take twin stern-drives and with a more spacious superstructure. Caring for one’s classic The Owner looked far and wide before purchasing this well-kept example as the boat, for over 25 years, had been stored under cover during every winter. A very knowledgeable Fairey Marine enthusiast, he has continued cherishing this lovely little ship, winterising the engines and dry storing the boat over winter. In 2023 the hull was sanded back, primed and repainted with 2 coats of Epiphanes Mono urethane. The top-sides were also sanded back, primed and repainted with 2 coats of Epiphanes Mono urethane. All the windows: were removed; the frames powder coated; the windows re-sealed in the frames and refitted. All the exterior woodwork was sanded back and re-varnished with 3 coats of International Yacht varnish. All the internal flooring was removed, sanded, and coated with two coats of Epoxy varnish. Hull and stern drives were abraded and given two coats of anti-foul. New 'Tek-Dek' synthetic teak decks were laid. In 2017 a new Jabsco heads was fitted In 2015 the hull was epoxy painted with 3 coats below waterline. Owner's Comments After many enjoyable adventures cruising the French inland waterways, and more recently the Solent, Tiger C II is now ready for a new custodian. Presented in fine original order throughout this robust classic has turned heads wherever we have been. She spent last winter in Bembridge Boat storage. The two Volvo engines and outdrives are very reliable and pleasantly economical. It’s been fun and I’d happily do it all again but life moves on.
