Cargo ship "Isebel" - A traditional vessel full of stories The cargo ship is a traditional, small coastal and river sailboat that was mainly used in the northern German region. Due to its design with a flat hull, round bow, and round stern, Ewers were the workhorses of the 18th-20th century. These broad sailing ships, which were later retrofitted with auxiliary engines, were perfect for transporting goods in rivers and tidal areas due to their shallow draft. They shaped the image of many ports over centuries, especially in Hamburg and Lübeck. Some well-preserved or restored cargo ships are used as museum or traditional vessels. A few have been converted into passenger ships or, like the "Isebel," into houseboats. The cargo ship "Isebel," which was launched in the Netherlands in 1907 as the pure cargo sailboat "Margarethe," has its own fascinating history that has only been partially researched so far. Multiple changes of ownership, retrofits, and a shipwreck that led to sinking and subsequent salvage are just some of the stories from the life of this cargo ship. In 1991, it was finally deregistered from the ship registry, marking the end of its commercial use. The then-owner had the ship dismantled as much as possible, including new masts that matched the original rigging. Further renovation and conversion took place from 2012 with the last owner who not only visually upgraded the cargo ship but also converted the old cargo hold into living space. In August 2024, the current owner acquired the cargo ship. Since then, all fresh and wastewater pipes have been replaced and rerouted. In the process, the water connections were moved outside, and the bathroom was newly installed. The hatch covers were re-covered with 8cm thick sandwich panels. Thanks to the maintained, water-fed oil heating system, the ship does not cool down on cold days. Two wood-burning stoves create a very cozy atmosphere. This coziness is also reflected in the complete renovation of the cargo ship. On deck, the masts and booms have been refurbished with Benar. The deckhouse was completely sanded and repainted. New hatches were installed in the floor, and the bilge in the cargo hold was renovated. Soon, the roof window on the starboard side must be resealed. In addition to the sanitary facilities, during the shipyard stay in March 2025, the engine was serviced, and the starter was replaced with a 24V one. The shaft stuffing box was renewed. The underwater hull was completely overhauled, doubled, all sacrificial anodes were replaced, and a new buoyancy certificate valid until March 2030 was issued. Whether as a cozy, unique houseboat or as a traveling witness under engine or sail - The story of the cargo ship "Isebel" continues.
