Houseboat & Residential Ship "Isebel" – Historic Cargo Vessel with Modern Living Comfort The historic cargo vessel "Isebel" combines over a century of maritime history with the comfort of a modernized houseboat. Stylishly converted into a residential ship, it offers an extraordinary alternative to traditional real estate, appealing especially to those looking to live permanently on the water or seeking a unique houseboat with character. Originally built in the Netherlands in 1907 as a cargo sailing ship named "Margarethe," the vessel featured a robust, wide construction with a shallow draft, making it ideal for rivers, canals, and tidal areas. After decades of commercial use, several changes of ownership, and a salvage operation following an accident, the ship was deregistered in 1991. In the subsequent years, it underwent a gradual transformation from a pure cargo ship to a comfortable residential vessel, with a focus on preserving its historical character while integrating modern living comforts. Today, the "Isebel" presents itself as a high-quality modernized houseboat with an authentic appearance. The former cargo hold has been converted into a cozy living area that combines the special charm of a traditional sailing ship with a warm, homely atmosphere. Extensive modernization measures have been carried out since the change of ownership in August 2024. All fresh and wastewater pipes have been renewed and rerouted, water connections led outside, and the bathroom completely rebuilt. The hatch covers have been replaced with eight-centimeter-thick sandwich panels, significantly improving the insulation and stability of the residential ship. For year-round living on the water, a serviced water-fed oil heating system ensures constant temperatures even on cold days. Two wood stoves with a fireplace further enhance the cozy ambiance, making the houseboat a comfortable retreat, especially in the cooler seasons. Masts and booms on deck have been carefully refurbished, the deckhouse fully sanded and repainted, and the bilge in the cargo hold renovated, combining a well-maintained exterior appearance with technical substance. Technically, the "Isebel" is up to date. During a shipyard stay in March 2025, the engine was serviced, the starter converted to 24 volts, and the shaft's stuffing box renewed. The underwater hull has been completely overhauled, partially doubled, and equipped with new sacrificial anodes. Additionally, a new buoyancy certificate valid until March 2030 has been issued. This houseboat not only offers charm and individuality but also certified safety. As a permanently moored residential ship or a sailing timepiece under engine or sail, the "Isebel" offers diverse usage possibilities. It exemplifies modern living on the water, blending the trend of houseboat living with the history of a traditional cargo vessel. For those seeking an extraordinary residential ship that combines historical character with modern technology, the "Isebel" provides a floating home with lasting value.
